Внешность:Alister is a graying man quite well past his physical prime. Even then, he never had neither bulk nor grace, relying on subtle changes in bloodflow and occult tricks to match his foes. Regardless of not being an exceptional specimen, he had always honored Creative by dressing and fashioning himself as sharply as he could, going to considerable lengths to preserve his looks in all, but the dirests of strains. Thus, even now, in his age, he is trying his best to stay perked up and tightly wounded, with slicked hair and squared jawline.
Характер:Alister is a deeply caring man, capable of feeling immense guilt for his failures; he cares too much, in fact, and he knows it - he cannot help it. The only line he draws is the distinction between those in need of his protection and those willfully becoming the danger to the former. He strives to resolve every moral quandary by uplifting the sides, but settles on determining the one that is guilty and putting it down for good first, if such a push comes to shove.
He will push himself and put himself at risk for everyone in need of help, but his husband Oliver is a special case, as Alister had failed him already and is completely determined to never do so again. He has no pretense that he is of that mind because of his love for Oliver as well and is simply trusting his other half to not lead him astray. As it happens that he already has strayed quite far from his other duties, he is only hoping that he is truly following his calling and not only his heart.
История:Alister was born in a family of a revered clockwork artizan Olivia Timewatcher and a much simpler guard Mehnir. Their marriage was happy, even as Olivia did her best to elevate Menhir's artistry to no avail: somehow, they both were satisfied to continually dance around the same clearing. Alister, it happened so, trained his body with his father and his sacred craft with his mother, growing up prepared and ready for hardship and unconventionality.
And indeed, as a youth, he had traversed the lands of the Church to their farthest reaches where heresies ran rampart and people needed every shred of simple help they could get. There, he had adapted Olivia's wildest designs into medical devices, kept in mortal bodies with the magic of his own blood. As he was working there, more and more he saw the deaths of those he was unable to save. Their final words reverberated in his soul until one day he realised the power of mortality. He still remembers every last one of those he had failed to save.
A decent decade later, Alister had to return to Artis on urgently delivered request from Olivia - Menhir was accused of being a heretic of indolence by the Inquistion. Even - and, perhaps, specifically - patronage of Olivia herself wasn't saving not only his freedom, but even his life. Time was running short and, out of other options, Alister connived with the Inquisitor General Ygrid Fleetfooted to personally expose Valencio Godmight himself as a heretic of destructiveness. The rogue - abandoned - Inquisitor refused to go down easily and Alister had to bring his knowledge of mortality to bear, emptying his veins and animating his own blood. He was named Godmaker that day, an Inquisitor too.
While Alister had little idea of why he would want to pursue heresies, if his calling was in helping others, he was allowed a year's time to mend his wounds and find his footing in Artis. That, was when he met the love of his life, title-less leecher apprentice at the time, Oliver. He was three years Alister's junior, talented in the arts of flesh and blood, and much greater surgeon than Alister himself. They met on a symposium and fell in love shortly. Still having some time to himself and needing an art form to excel at, Alister was glad that Oliver had suggested to focus on clockworks themselves and to leave actual operations to him: he was able to bear the weight of failure easier and had less of them to boot.
His first day as an Inquisitor Alister marked by the unveiling of his clockwork design capable of sustaining the bloodflow in a separated limb for the whole day, keeping it alive for the later reattachment. His first heretic consigned to death for the pernicious persistence as a heretic of disruption, riling others up to follow in his stead. That name and face Alister remembers only briefly - he felt no guilt for those, who fell willingly. There were many others, but this first one mattered as his death was Alister's triumph that he celebrated by proposing to Oliver Lighthanded. The macabre irony escaped them and those, who saw it still, knew better than to voice their findings.
Years flew by, with many others failing to disturb the peace of the Church and falling to Alister's assault. He grew in his art of a clockmaker, even replacing his own heart with an intricate clockwork capable of accepting many crystals of, purportedly, angelic make. The one he liked the most, replenished his own spent blood at a rapid pace. Oliver was growing in his craft much faster, too. Among other Inquisitors Alister was who Valencio should have been: defender of the week in body and mind both; his was the duty of a shepherd dog, guarding the herd and keeping the sheep together. He had help, of course: a conclave of experts he was coming to for advice; a small team of Artis guards he was taking with him on arrests.
He was the one to bring down Ygrid Fleetfooted for no fault of her own - one of his experts, Magna, has found a clue in the investigation of a string of disturbing murders hinting to a heretic of disruption on the loose. He had recommended that Ygrid, who was taking the investigation seriously enough to lead it, took her on board. Magna is the one heretic Alister remembers vividly: because of that and because he had failed her much as he had failed all of his patients that he was unable to save; he wasn't attentive enough, caring enough to notice the menace under their noses. Even when the circle of suspicion narrowed down to Magna and her teacher Heinrich, Alister failed to see the obvious.
There was another reason why he remembers Magna: she broke into an operating room, confouned Alister with a rune, and stole Oliver away. She tied his supple, artful hands to the ceiling and began tracing her blasphemous runes on his body. Alister saved him and healed the scars, but Oliver's hands had no bloodflow in them for too long. That might be why Alister failed to say Magna - yet more reason she haunts his dreams. That is why Oliver had to use clockworks for the rest of his life. Thankfully, it was long: twenty more years Alister, the Inquisitor General now; and Oliver were together, happy and content.
It ended abruptly: during the surgery, Oliver opened the patient's chest and Alister put his knowledge of mortality to work pumping blood and invigorating flesh. His clockwork was holding the chest open when paintings began to weep blood. It pooled on the floor, as Alister tried to balance keeping the patient alive and the floor clean. He failed - the blood covered the entire operation room and Oliver fell into it like it was an endless pit. Alister was unable to follow.
It took him and his conclave good time to puzzle together the happening: that, was how the reach of Hell was described. Alister pushed his research and authority even when his scholars felt the chill of blasphemy and abstained; he had found the way to Hell itself, where he was going to travel to rescue his husband. None of his personal guards had the bravery to follow; Artist Elodus had threatened excommunication - by the time Alister had reached his goal on this Earth, he might have been stripped of his titles and named a heretic of disruption himself. How fitting. He cared none.
